Pride in Pill affectionately known as PIP was formed in 2014 by Chairman Paul Murphy.
PIP was originally set up as a community litter pick group six year ago, but has grown into something so much more.
PIP has become a multi award winning group with The Queens Award MBE 2017 being it’s jewel in the crown. Pill is one of Newport most ethnically diverse, deprived areas, crime, unemployment and substance misuse along with anti social behaviour is high on it’s agenda.
PIP hope to encourage people to take pride in the area by encouraging them to get involved. We hope our events raise awareness of what’s happening in our city.
The litter pick side is well established with PIP organising hundreds of events. In 2018 some of the volunteers took part in sharps training allowing us to be called on by the residents of the city to pick up thousands of disregarded needles, this has proven to be a huge part of PIP and has made us a household name.
In 2018 PIP had a boost of new volunteers who are self motivated and thrive on PIPs success and after a hugely successful city wide campaign PIP Supporting The Homeless Project was born. Sadly the number of people living in crisis in our city is growing and we are delighted to be working with other well established groups and organisations to help people live the life they deserve. We have now been supporting the city homeless since 2018 . We have gained trust and been privileged to see people go from homeless to housed. We have been honoured to be part of people’s complicated lives and watch them through thier journey. We have close links with many of the city’s restaurants and takeaways who have joined our homeless meal voucher scheme. We have two Greggs end of day food contacts.
Along side these projects we also run PIP community non profit coach trips. This year we are arranging trips to Bridgewater Carnival, Bath and Birmingham Christmas Market and Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park , London.
We also make regular donations to Stow Park Community Church Food Bank through links with Sainsbury’s, Kingsway Centre. We have an Elvis musical fundraising event in May to raise vital funds to keep the group going.
We have been sponsored by many local businesses and are grateful for their continued support.
We are always looking to recruit new volunteers for our litter picks. It can be hard to find the time to volunteer but it has enormous benefits. Giving back can help protect your own physical and mental health.
The aim of our group is all about community, we have a strong moral ethos. We believe that everyone from all walks of life should be given a chance to live in a safe place, feel loved and respected.
PIP is six years old this month and we are all proud of what we have achieved. We hope that with the City’s support we will continue to grow ….you never know what’s around the corner. The trustees are grateful to all the volunteers who without them PIP would not be such a success.
Happy Birthday PIP .
